£1 million plan for Olympic gateway
BEACH CENTRE: An artist's impression of the planned Chesil Beach Centre on the Causeway
BEACH CENTRE: An artist's impression of the planned Chesil Beach Centre on the Causeway

VISITORS for the 2012 Olympics are likely to be greeted with a gleaming new visitor centre at Chesil Beach to mark the gateway to Portland.

More than £1 million is due to be invested in upgrading the existing complex, extending the current building and adding a new facilities block.

Sam Rose, team leader for the Jurassic Coast World Heritage team, said a bid for lottery funding towards the cost of the centre is due to be submitted next month. He said: "It should cost between £1 million and £1.5 million, but it certainly won't be more than that.

"The whole thing is being done through Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.

"We are preparing a bid for the Heritage Lottery Fund at the moment for some of the funds and already have a commitment from the South West Regional Development Agency. We are close to finishing an education, interpretation and audience development strategy, which is to work out how the centre is going to work, who is going to use it and what audience it will be aimed at."

Plans have been approved for the revamped centre, which will boast 315 square metres of floor space and a brand new separate 85 square metre block containing a warden office and toilet facilities.

The existing display and exhibition room will be extended to two-and-a-half times its existing size.

There will also be a new education room designed to seat up to 50 people as well as a new reception area and improved cafe.

The proposals also include plans for a boardwalk to the south of the centre that will enable visitors to walk across the creek at any stage of the tide to the edge of the Chesil bank.

Other plans include closing the northern access to the centre and creating a new entrance for vehicles some 80 metres south along the Portland Beach Road.

Mr Rose said: "It will be upgraded to a quality that is worthy of a world heritage site.

"We don't want to extend too much because natural environment and it will have a very similar roof profile to the existing building."

Now planning application has been granted for the extension, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council has had to apply to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Hilary Benn for permission to carry out restricted works on Portland Common.

Very strange that they can suddenly find the money to do this now when we have had to put up with the degusting state of the car park for years!!!!!

Could they demolish that brute of building the Masonic Hall whilst they're at it.

This pre-supposes that the visitors will be able to get there after traversing the partly built 'A354 relief road' and proposed restrictions on travelling down Portland Beach Road for 'security' reasons.

What with all the evidence of rising sea levels, is this really a good idea, expecting sea levels to increase annually, it won't be long until this new building will be prone to flooding.

As long as they don't call it "Weymouth and portland Chesil Beach centre" like they did to the "PORTLAND NATIONAL SAILING ACADAMY"

As it's based in the Borough of Weymouth & Portland and it's activities will be using Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour what better name for it than Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy?

I think what Portland nipper is referring to is the fact that things seem to be changing to suit Weymouth, as far as I am aware Portland has always been considered to start at Ferrybridge there is even a sign saying welcome to the Royal Manor of Portland & everything this side of Ferrybridge has always been considered to be Portland, (but that was in the days when Portland was the underdog) but now things seem to have changed. Land that was part of Portland air station i.e. those ugly fuel tanks that defiantly did not form part of Weymouth because they where far to ugly has suddenly become Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy. And now we have two stupid stone pillars stuck in no mans land off Victoria Square that are supposed to be the gateway to Portland so does this mean that everything north of those pillars is now Weymouth. Perhaps Portland Port should change their name to Weymouth & Portland Port.

Mikeman,
It's all part of an ongoing boundary exchange policy to improve the integration of W &P. Weymouth gets to have bits of Portland and vice versa.
The gas tanks on Westwey Road (formerly in Weymouth) are now a Portland enclave.
The view across Chesil to Weymouth from New Road will belong to Weymouth and in return you get the view from Westwey Road onto the North Quay with the spectacular backdrop of Chapelhay Heights rearing up behind.
What do you reckon?

Actually I don't know where the designated boundary line between W & P lies but I've always regarded Portland as starting where the oil tanks were. Beach Road being neither wholly Weymouth or Portland. Nothing to do with the tanks being ugly just that they were part of the port.

Why are the "facts" being changed to suit Weymouth? As said Weymouth and Portland are one single Borough. For too long Weymouth and Portland have suffered from missing out on opportunities by petty mindedness and NIMBYism. If we can't work together we might as well give up now. Let the Portland Small-minded Re-naming Society have it's way but remember it will be Weymouth Tourist Information Centre, rather than Weymouth and Portland, on the seafront. It's Weymouth Borough Council at North Quay. Weymouth Housing rather than Weymouth and Portland Housing....how far do you want to go?

As for the sailing academy it should properly be called The National Sailing Academy - address as now, Osprey Quay, Portland, Dorset, DT5 1SA .

But to get from the acadamy to weymouth bay, you have to pass through PORTLAND HARBOUR...hence PORTLAND AND WEYMOUTH NATIONAL SAILING ACADAMY! Thanks to Mikeman and Spangler for your support...I will always wear it!

What is Portland Harbour? An artificial harbour formed out off and forming part off Weymouth Bay. As Weymouth Bay in it's turn forms part of the English Channel.

Portland Nipper,
I don't think there is any argument whether this location is Portland or not. If there is an official boundary mark set at the southern end of Ferrybridge fine and so what, I think most people would still regard the entry point to Portland as roughly where the main land mass starts, i.e. where the oil tanks were but I don't think too many people are that bothered.
The sailing academy would have the same name even if it was in Weymouth harbour.

Can we stop this childish bickering. If god was going to give South Dorset an enema he'd have a difficult choice between Portland or Weymouth for where to stick the tube!

Mikeman, Portland rightly points out
" Portland has always been considered to start at Ferrybridge "
But the bridge was moved quite a few yards nearer Portland.

genghis, portland raises the conundrum that " Weymouth Bay in it's turn forms part of the English Channel "

As the French call this Le Manche and consider it theirs, perhaps the whole project should be renamed Froglympia 2012.

The Osprey Sailing Academy sounds better.

If you lived on portland, and had to watch your council tax money go to weymouth, and watch as the steam cleaners clean chewing gum off st Mary, and st thomas street, watch how the sands get raked every morning, all the lovely bins getting emptied, that adorn the promanade, these are just some of the things, that Portland does not get...and we pay more than you. We get our bins emptied once a week, and that is set to rise. A silly machine that is supposed to sweep the roads but all it does is fling it in all directions. It even comes out in the Rain, What on earth can it pick up when it's wet? Compared to the services you get in weymouth...we are the least thought of by our so called Borough council. I have every right to be miffed. That weymouth has now decided, it, is the sole venue for the sailing olympics, you have had your little party, and weymouth will be the only benificiary. Portland will be just as forgotten then, as it is now! Lame Brain? yep...You love your town! Mate...I love my town too. PDUC forever!

Weymouth has not 'decided it is the sole venue for the sailing Olympics'! And anyway, as far as I'm aware, most true Portlanders would perish at the thought of too much publicity soley for the island, most of them preferring to keep things local and out of the limelight. There's even a facebook campaign to 'keep Portland weird'! I've never really noticed a difference between the waste services of Weymouth & Portland (I have lived in both places) but I'm sure that if there are more frequent collections in Weymouth, then this is relative to the amount of waste being produced-ie, after a Saturday night in town! Portland doesn't strike me as being less well looked after than Weymouth in my opinion.
