Victory bus parade planned for Olympic athletes
A VICTORY bus parade will celebrate our Olympic sailors across Weymouth and Portland on Monday, September 1.
It is hoped that crowds of people will welcome the triumphant Weymouth-based sailors Sarah Ayton, Paul Goodison and Saskia Clark, and windsurfers Nick Dempsey and Bryony Shaw, home to the borough.
Sherborne sailor Andrew Simpson and taekwondo ace Aaron Cook from Dorchester have also been invited on board. The British sailing team returned from the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games' sailing venue of Qingdao earlier this week with a total medal haul of four gold medals, one silver and a bronze, which helped Team GB to achieve its best medal haul for 100 years.
The open-top bus will leave Weymouth Pavilion at 1pm and be accompanied by police escort to the cross roads of New Bond Street and Bond Street in the town centre. The sailors, whose attendance is yet to be confirmed, will move to The Heights Hotel on Portland at 2.10pm. They will then go to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy for a press conference.
Mayor of Weymouth and Portland Tim Munro said: "The level of dedication to represent your country as an Olympian athlete is almost beyond comprehension. It is one of my proudest moments to welcome home members of our Olympic sailing team on behalf of the borough."

The thought is there, but, it is a shame it is happening when most people are at work.

I thought the council were going to do something "Big & Different" for the return of our athletes? I seem to remember a Sureline open top bus last time our sailors won some medals.I also agree with Wykeite this should be done in the evening with maybe a reception at the pavillion after so that people have a chance to meet the sailors and maybe see what an olympic medal looks like.

Probably worth confirming it, then...

I would love to go and see them, but as mentioned above I am working as I am sure are many other people. Own goal by W&PBC again. How do they expect people to give their support when they organise things that many people can not attend.

Well I went to see the open top bus 4 years ago, and it wasn't that well attended, The bus went right into the centre of town at about 6.30pm-7.00pm. The town was naturally quiet, so it was only the 200-300 people who took the trouble to go into town that were there. So I can only presume that because of this poor turn out last time, they might have decided to change the time. Its not perfect...but perhaps this is the reason?

What timing of the bus ride. The youngsters who could be encouraged into the olympics of 2012 will return to school that very day.
Was that deliberate or just a lack of forethought.
quote
Come on people! Do the council have to do everything for you? Perhaps they could fill in a holiday request form for you? Or maybe just ring your boss... If you really wanted to be there you could. Is an hour from work such a big deal?
